Hooray for awards season, which properly kicked off this weekend with the Golden Globes. It’s the perfect antidote to January gloom: never mind the fact that I still haven’t done my tax return and my dishwasher’s had what appears to be an ill-timed stroke (la la la la I’m not listening!). Let’s escape to Tinseltown and talk about dresses! I, like many, love swiping through the best dressed edits and being a proper fashion judgy-pants – it’s quite a hobby. And if when my time comes to grace the red carpet, I sure as hell won’t be opting for a hackneyed floaty Grecian number a la Saoirse Ronan, nor will I be fulfilling any adult Barbie ambitions (looking at you, Malin Akerman) because that, dear reader, would be a massive cop out. My red carpet heroines are the ones that dare to be different with their sartorial sass – and on a global platform at that.

The nominees (click to enlarge) are…RCR1Emilia Clarke is a gothic caped crusader in this noir number by Valentino

Olivia Palmero looks every bit the Italian mod in this striking number from Delpozo

Jane Fonda out-fashions the young’uns with mega ruffles courtesy of Yves Saint Laurent

I am crazy-eyed for Uzo Aduba’s Talbot Runhof dress – those sleeves! – and you know how I feel about sequins

Taylor Schilling gets all the thumbs for her chic and sparkly trouser suit

Portia Doubleday looks ready to D.I.S.C.O in this glitter-ball inspired gown

Melissa McCarthy looks laid-back and luxurious in this 70s gunmetal dress

Jamie Alexander’s black and emerald Genny gown champions bold geometrics

And the winner is…

Jennifer Lopez, who owned this year’s Golden Globes (the red carpet bit at least) in a glorious Giambattista Valli gown. Ladylike coverage, caped, and in SS16-ready mustard… J’approve.
