I had been on the lookout for a proper tomato ketchup coloured nail polish for ages – bright red, yes, but the cooler, edgier younger sister of full-on sexy scarlet. The difference in pigmentation may be subtle but when it comes to meaning, the two are worlds apart. A classic red carries with it certain connotations, and whether you associate the hue with Betty Boop or Bet Lynch, you cannot escape the sexy. That orangey tinge, however, affords your no less look-at-me talons an artsy, fashion aesthetic and that sits way more comfortably with me.

My search ended when I happened upon this chic little number right under my nose in our team make-up drawer at work (yup, we have one of those), and of course, being a packaging slut, its slinky rectangular bottle and Hepburn-esque black bow instantly appealed to me. This stuff is great: thinner (read less gloopy) than your average nail colour, it goes on a treat and in Red Hot Chili it’s exactly the tomato-y twist I craved. Behold: my new signature shade…
